Delete your account

Effective August 20, 2026

1. How to delete it

Open Learn Mandarin, go to Progress, find the Account section, and choose Delete account. You will be asked for your password to confirm, because this cannot be reversed and a signed-in phone in someone else's hand should not be enough. That is the whole process; nothing is queued for review and no one has to approve it.

If you cannot sign in — a forgotten password with no access to the email address, say — email [email protected] from the address on the account and we will delete it for you. We may need to confirm you control that address before we do.

2. What is deleted

Deleting the account removes, immediately and permanently:

• your email address and the stored hash of your password;
• the study progress synced to the account, which is the copy on our server;
• any outstanding password-reset links, which stop working at once.

You are signed out on the device you delete from. Other devices you are signed in on stop syncing and keep the progress already on them.

3. What is not deleted, and why

The progress on your device. Learn Mandarin is local-first: your cards, review history and streak live in your browser's storage on each device, and an account is a copy of that rather than the original. Deleting the account does not touch them, so you can carry on studying exactly where you were. To clear that copy too, use Reset progress on the Progress screen, or clear this site's data in your browser settings — on each device you have used.

Card error reports. If you flagged a card as wrong, what reached us is the word's number in the deck and the kind of problem — nothing that identifies you, or your device, or your account. There is nothing in those rows to delete, and we keep them so the deck gets fixed.

Anything we must keep by law. Where a legal obligation requires us to retain a record, we retain that and nothing more.

4. Advertising and analytics

These never depended on an account and are not affected by deleting one. You can withdraw consent at any time from Cookie settings at the bottom of the app; the Privacy Policy explains what is collected either way.
