## `ukai-cn-subset.woff2` — modification notice

This file is a **modified** copy of **AR PL UKai CN**, © 1999 Arphic Technology
Co., Ltd., distributed under the Arphic Public License (`ARPHICPL.txt`, kept
alongside it as the license requires).

**What was changed, and when:** on 2026-07-28 the `AR PL UKai CN` face was
extracted from the `ukai.ttc` collection and subset to the 1,170 Chinese
characters that appear as headwords in this app's deck. Glyph outlines were not
redrawn; every remaining glyph is Arphic's original. Characters outside the deck
were removed, and the result was converted to WOFF2.

**How to reproduce it:** `npm run build:font` — see `scripts/build-font.mjs`,
whose header gives the source-font download commands. Re-run it whenever the
deck's character coverage changes, or the app will fall back to a system face
for the new characters.

Per the Arphic Public License, this subset remains under the APL and may be
redistributed and further modified on the same terms.

## Why this font

Hanzi Writer's stroke-order outlines derive from Arphic UKai (by way of
[Make Me a Hanzi](https://github.com/skishore/makemeahanzi)), so this is the
same typeface the stroke panel draws. It is used for the flashcard headword
only — the character being learned — so that revealing the answer refines the
character in place rather than swapping it for a different design. UI text and
example sentences stay on the system sans.
